The family of teacher Ann Maguire have laid flowers at the entrance to the school where she was stabbed to death in front of her pupils.

Their visit to Corpus Christi Catholic College, Leeds, came after a student appeared in court charged with the 61-year-old's murder.

The 15-year-old suspect was remanded in custody following a brief hearing at a youth court in the city.

Mrs Maguire's husband and two daughters held hands as they sat in the public gallery, metres away from the alleged killer.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt, in Leeds, said: "The teenager didn't have to say anything and appeared in the dock wearing a dark jumper and trousers.

"He showed no obvious signs of emotion as he was asked whether he understood the charge of murder, to which he nodded in response."

The youngster, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Friday for a bail hearing.

Earlier, Mrs Maguire's family issued a moving tribute to the 61-year-old, describing her as a "shining light who brightened the world for so many".

"We are devastated. Her selfless, genuine, caring nature will remain with us eternally."

Mrs Maguire had worked at Corpus Christi Catholic College for more than 40 years and was due to retire later this year.

She taught Spanish at the school and was also in charge of Year 11.
