A drone came within 20ft (six metres) of a passenger plane which was about to land at Heathrow Airport, a report has revealed.
The Airbus A320 was 700ft from landing when a small black object was spotted by the pilot, hovering to the left of the aircraft.
The incident was detailed in a report by the UK Airprox Board (UKAB) which examines near -misses with aircraft.
According to the report, the object "passed about 20ft over the wing" and appeared to be a small radio-controlled helicopter.
The device did not hit the plane and the pilot managed to make a normal landing after the near-miss, which took place at 2.16pm on 22 July this year.
The report emphasised that the near-miss happened during a critical phase of the flight.
After the pilot spotted the drone, air traffic controllers were alerts and aircraft were notified.
The UKAB said: "Despite extensive tracing action and the proactive assistance of local model flying club members, it was not possible to trace the operator of the model aircraft in question."
The report did not say which carrier was operating the Airbus or where the Airbus had flown in from.
The airline pilots' association BALPA wants drones to meet the same safety standards as piloted aircraft.
General secretary Jim McAuslan said: "The UK should become a 'safe drone zone' so we can make the most of the major business and leisure opportunities offered by remotely piloted aircraft, while protecting passengers, pilots and residents."
Aviation experts are warning it is only a matter of time before a drone causes a major accident with a passenger jet in the skies above Britain.
