All Eurostar services have been cancelled and trains are returning to their stations after a fire in the Channel Tunnel.
Eurostar, which operates car and lorry-carrying trains through the tunnel, said it was closed in both directions.
Kent Police said the smoke was caused by a lorry fire at the French end of the tunnel. No injuries have been reported.
Messages to several customers from Eurostar's Twitter account said the tunnel would be closed "until this evening".
One passenger, Helen Todd, tweeted: "Smoke in the channel tunnel! So unlucky! Hope they sort it soon!"
