A man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after a trespass incident at the Houses of Parliament.

Police were made aware of a man on the roof of the building at 9.15pm on Saturday.

Police negotiators were called to the scene and London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service also attended.

Just after 5am, however, the man came down and was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and trespassing.

The 23-year-old was taken to a police station in central London pending further police enquiries.

Sky News Political Correspondent Jason Farrell, who was at the scene, says the man seemed "quite young and quite relaxed".

It was not known why the man was on the roof, Farrell said.

Campaigners have used the roof for stunts in the past, including protesters in 2008 demonstrating against a third runway at Heathrow.

And a year later dozens of Greenpeace protesters climbed on to the roof to call for action on climate change.

During that protest, they unfurled banners which read: "Change the politics, save the climate."

Earlier on Saturday, more than 5,000 protesters gathered outside Parliament for a climate change demonstration.
